Dear
Tom Allen,
As
you can see from these two attachments there is a total confusion among all
involved parties about the events ahead of the 2nd June rally.
As
far as I can see we have to do with blatant manipulation, that would be a merit
for any of Tony Blair's spin-doctors. BOND, represented by you, are speaking
with two voices about your decision of rejecting the sculpture.
One
voice for the press and all the NGO's that have sent messages of complaint is
telling that the decision is not yours, but Rainbo's, and that you are not
opposed to displaying sculpture according with the original agreement.
The
other voice directed to Rainbo, and so to us, you in several messages tell that
the sculpture cannot be displayed due to considerations for the Christian part
of the public and due to your vision of a family-friendly rally with circus,
songs, etc.
Despite
of various requests, especially our letter of 30th May, you have evaded sending
us a clear declaration telling that we can display the sculpture according to
our agreement with Rainbo. We did not receive any response to our letter
containing a simple and crucial question.
I
urge you to stop this manipulation and overtly stick to your decision in stead
of speaking with two voices in an attempt to mislead the press, the NGO's, and
the public. We essentially acknowledge your right to decide about the agenda of
your rally, but BOND should also
recognise our right to question your decisions. But you block out a
constructive discussion by muddling the issue with spin.
We
look forward to receiving a clear response to this letter and the attached
letters without spin and manipulation.
We
have put some essential parts of the communication on our website, see

Yours
sincerely,

Dear Jens,
I am equally surprised by this
communication – it’s without a doubt from Tom Allen’s email (below), what the
position and decision of the “Mobilization Group” was on our intention to
exhibit the sculpture. This is further confirmed by the last paragraph from Dr.
Toubia’s response that was circulated to all BOND members and yourself….
“However,
in the event that the organizers of the June 2nd campaign see it
fit to reverse their decision we would be happy to work with Jens, and
others, to articulate the essential message of the sculpture to a wider
audience.”
I hope this erases any doubt in your
mind as to who made the decision that we could not exhibit the sculpture at the
2nd June event.

Dear Oloo,
I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I've shared this with my colleagues on the
Mobilisation Group and we've come to the decision that, much as we sympathise
with your messages and objectives, we don't think it would be appropriate to
exhibit this sculptor on 2nd June.
There are two reasons: one is that this is a
family-friendly upbeat day aimed at a young audience, two is that there
will be a lot of Christian organisations, and
individual Christians, involved, including CAFOD, Church of England,
Tearfund, Christian Aid, etc. I'm afraid this sculpture is just too
"heavy" for this audience.
Perhaps Rainbo would still like to have a stall
in the main park, with information about the work you do and the issues
you work on? We think this exhibition would be inappropriate however.
Let me know how you want to proceed, and if you
want a stall. We understand if this means you want to reconsider your £500
donation to the campaign as well. I can talk on the phone to you again Oloo,
but I'm on a teleconference for the next twenty minutes. My desk number is 020
7520 0253.

Dear
Tom,
Further
to out conversation earlier, find attached a brief put together by the artist
who did the sculptor "In the Name of God" that we intend to
exhibit at the 2nd June event.
The
sculpture depicts a pregnant teenage girl in natural size crucified on a high
cross. It is intended as a sculptural outcry, an artist's comment to the crusade
against contraception and sexual rights launched by fundamentalists the world
over.
Our
intention during the 2nd June event is to use the sculpture to
highlight the links between ending poverty and increasing the access of girls
and women to reproductive health services. We hope to put across the message - we
cannot end poverty without increasing women's rights to make decisions
regarding their sexual and reproductive rights. We will be distributing
flyers containing key facts and figures.
Please
let us know if this will be OK with the expected crowd.
Kind
regards,
Oloo
