Galschiot back in Hong Kong
He travelled 8,700 kilometers from Denmark to Hong Kong in both 2008 and 2009. Just to be denied
access and sent back home, by Hong Kong authorities under heavy influence
of the Chinese government.
But this Thursday, artist and creator of the Tiananmen memorial ‘The Pillar
of Shame’, Jens Galschiot finally got to enter Hong Kong.
Galschiot has been invited to Hong Kong by The Hong Kong Alliance
in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, to inspect and
repair the sculpture ‘The Pillar of Shame’.
It was placed in Hong Kong by the artist in 1997 as a present to the
students of Hong Kong, to commemorate the 1989 massacre on the Tiananmen
Square in Beijing. A massacre on students, demonstrating against corruption
and for freedom of speech and democratic reforms in China.
Jens Galschiot will stay in Hong Kong until Wednesday 2nd. His
schedule is as follows:
• Saturday, September 28th : Purchase materials to repair ‘The Pillar of
Shame’.
• Sunday, September 29th : 11am – 4pm. Repairing the sculpture at Hong Kong
U.
• Monday, September 30th : Further reparation of sculpture at Hong Kong U.
• Tuesday October 1st : From 2pm, participate in March through Hong Kong in
favor of freedom of speech, democracy and release of political prisoners in
China.
• Wednesday October 2nd : Repaint the sculpture in
the Human Rights Color
