Press Release
12th of may 1997
To the editor
Dear Sir/Madam,
A global art happening called the Pillar of Shame has started. The first original
sculpture has been shipped and is in this moment crossing the Indian Ocean with course to
Hong Kong. This eight metres high art missile will arrive on 25th May. In cooperation with
50,000 Chinese pro democracy demonstrators the sculpture will be mounted for the
commemoration of the short Chinese spring in '89.
Set up in Hong Kong on 4th June, a few weeks before the handover, some will view the
sculpture almost as a terror act. However, the Pillar of Shame is a scuiptural outcry from
an artist with the right to say what he likes, to the Chinese people who risk their lives
for making use of the same right.
